Gambier islands: Tena Koutou

The Gambier Islands, grouped around Mangareva, are a concentrate of Polynesia : 5 high islands and 18 motu in one lagoon, multiplying white sand beaches and secret coves.

This is where pearl farming first developed, and Gambier pearls are extremely renowned and valued. Cradle of Catholic evangelization in Polynesia, the Gambier archipelago has many churches and cathedrals, built in coral stone blocks on former traditional cult sites, maintained and rehabilitated with fervor. Close to the Tropic of Capricorn, the Gambier Islands abound with fruit trees.

The Gambier archipelago has many assets :

Gambier islands: Tena koutou Its extraordinary many-colored lagoon that holds all of the archipelago and offers heavenly vistas:
5 high islands, only one of which is inhabited (Mangareva) and 18 motu that gather all the different Polynesian landscapes.

Its characteristic flora:
Drawing a lush, green landscape thanks to a tropical climate tempered by the ocean’s trade winds.

Originally the center of mother-of-pearl trading, the Gambier then specialized in cultured pearls.
Many pearl farms are established there and it ispossible to visit them and buy pearls. Gambier pearls are famous for their beauty and perfection.

An island with a past :
Both ancient Polynesian culture, with many archeological remnants, and the Christian era with the various 19th century cathedral and churches - the oldest in Polynesia -, often on former “pagan” religious sites. The Gambier were the heart of Catholic evangelization and many religious and public edifices were built, and most of them have been rehabilitated. Do not miss the Cathédrale Saint-Michel, built in coral blocks, with its pearl- and nacre-inlaid
altar.

Spirituality :
With its very deep Catholic faith, life in the archipelago is punctuated by many religious celebrations (such as Our-Lady-of-the-Peace Day) and beautiful singing services, processions and varied decorations. Preserved and authentic islands with untouched nature, several uninhabited atolls, bays and inlets rich in marine life.
